Mental Health First Aid Training Geelong – Standard (MHFA)

Did you know that 1 in 5 Australian adults will experience a common mental illness each year? Completing a Mental Health First Aid Training in Geelong will help you to develop the skills to support a friend, family member or co-worker.

What the course covers:

The course teaches adults how to assist others who are developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. Course participants learn about the signs and symptoms of the common and disabling mental health problems, where and how to get help when a someone is developing a mental illness, what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective, and how to provide first aid in a crisis situation.

Developing mental health problems covered are:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety problems
  • Psychosis
  • Substance use problems
  • Eating disorders

Mental health crisis situations covered in the course include:

  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
  • Non-suicidal self-injury (deliberate self-harm)
  • Panic attacks
  • Traumatic events
  • Severe effects of drug and alcohol abuse
  • Severe psychotic states
  • Aggressive behaviours.

Mental Health First Aid Training Can Make a Difference

MHFA training is associated with improved knowledge of mental illnesses, their treatments and appropriate first aid strategies, as well as confidence in providing first aid to individuals with mental illness. Research has shown that MHFA training is associated with:

Knowledge: improved knowledge of mental illnesses, their treatments and appropriate first aid strategies.

Confidence: confidence in providing first aid to a person experiencing a mental health problem.

De-Stigmatising: decreases in stigmatising attitudes.

Increased Support: increases in the amount and type of support provided to others.

When:

Thursday 29 and Friday 30 of April, at 9:00am – 4:00pm, participants must attend both sessions.

Format of the course:

The Mental Health First Aid training in Geelong is a 12 hour course, or 2-day training run for 6 hours per day.

Course participants receive a copy of the MHFA Manual to keep and a Certificate of Completion.

A manual is provided to each participant attending this 14-hour MHFA course that is yours to keep.

Who is the instructor?

Fran Power will be your primary instructor for the two days. Fran is a Youth Counsellor with over ten years experience in 1 on 1, group and family counselling. You can see Fran’s bio through Mental Health First Aid Australia HERE.

Suitably qualified with a Bachelor of Social Science and a Graduate Diploma of Counselling and Psychotherapy, she has proven success in receiving 100% satisfactory responses from clients in the evaluation of the effectiveness of supports provided by monitoring client’s progress via treatment, sound evaluation, effective documentation and assessment of goals.

Do you run this course to a private group?

Yes, of course. We can deliver the course to a group of 6 or more adults at your preferred location, times and dates.

On the day what do you need to bring?

Just a pen, yourself and an open mind ready to learn.

Morning tea and afternoon tea will be provided. The venue is close to cafes for your lunch break.

The venue is close to public transport and parking is available around the venue.

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

You must be 18 years or older to attend the Youth Mental Health First Aid Course

What’s the refund policy?

Tickets will be refunded 100% up to two weeks before the event.

If the tickets are cancelled in the two weeks leading up the event the discount be assessed on a case by case

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

No, please save paper 🙂

Is my registration fee or ticket transferrable?

Yes, I would much rather people learning that the ticket going to waste. please let me know before the event.
